The skin and the central nervous system both originate from the ectoderm, the outermost layer of the early embryo. That shared beginning is not a metaphor. It is the reason researchers describe skin as a peripheral extension of the stress system rather than an inert covering.
Skin cells can produce and respond to many of the same signalling molecules involved in the body's stress response. Cortisol and neuropeptides such as substance P have been studied in relation to sebum production, barrier recovery speed and inflammatory signalling. The picture is complex and still being mapped, but the direction of the research is consistent: the state of the nervous system appears to register at the surface.
What this does not mean is that stress causes breakouts in a simple, linear way. Skin disruption is multifactorial. Hormones, genetics, the skin microbiome, occlusion, friction, humidity and the products applied to and around the face all contribute.
What it may mean is that periods of poor sleep and sustained pressure change the conditions the skin is operating in. A barrier that recovers more slowly, sebum that behaves differently, a lower threshold for irritation. Not a cause. A context.
The Halo Theory is interested in that context, and in the parts of it that a person can realistically influence: what settles on the skin overnight, what is applied around its edges, and how a routine ends.
The skin is not a passive surface. It listens.
